This is the cross piece for the volunteer infantry officer's Home Service helmet, worn between 1871 and 1914. The Home Service helmet was made of cork and covered in blue cloth or sometimes dark green or grey wool with a linen lining. These helmets were influenced in their design by the Prussian picklehaube of the 19th century. The condition is excellent, with some minor buckling and 98% of the original gilt finish remaining. However, the nuts which secure the mount to the helmet are missing. |
