This is the standard German combat bayonet of WW2. It has matching numbers to the blade and scabbard and is maker marked Eickhorn (and dated 1939) at the forte of the blade and at the scabbard throat. The frog is also dated 1939 with the maker's initials LLG and the district Schlesien. The leather frog appears to have a piece of shrapnel embedded in the back of it, which has torn one edge of the stitching on one side. The securing screw at the scabbard throat is missing. The grips are bakelite and the blade has most of its original blue finish, but this has been lost down at the point. The finish to the hilt is a dark patina with traces of the original blue. The bulk of the scabbard below the frog has been cleaned to remove surface rust and there is a little blue under the frog stud. |
