Title Kildare Rifles glengarry badge
Nationality British
Period c 1870-81
Sold

In 1881, the Kildare Rifles became the 3rd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. The design is notable for being the only militia badge design with serpents, perhaps commemorating St Patrick's famous ridding the Emerald Isle of its serpents. It is in excellent shape, with the bulk of its blacking intact; the copper highlights are visible throughout.

These badges replaced the county militia titles worn formerly on the Pork Pie hat of the post-Crimea period. The glengarry cap, which replacecd the Pork Pie hat, looks like an American overseas cap, but with the addition of two silk tails at the rear and a pom pom on the top.

Thanks very much for the bayonet. I am very happy, I think your photos of your items are great because nothing is hidden and you can clearly see them. (Unlike some other dealers.) Everything was as you describe, I will be keeping a eye on your site for any further bayonets for my collection.
