This set of cutlery was made for the first wave of European tourists to Bosnia's capital, Sarajevo, in the mid-to-late 19th century. The knife has 'Sarajevo' in silver overlay inscribed at the forte on one side, while on the other there is Islamic script, also in silver. The grips are made of bone and are profusely inlaid with brass and copper base metal (a few of which are missing). Both knife and fork have copious silver overlay, the fork having a blued steel finish to the bolster. Curiously enough, they do not appear in any of the cutlery books that I have in my fairly extensive library on this subject, but I believe they were made in reasonable quantity and quite often could be purchased in sets of a dozen. |
