The 3rd Army took Belgrade on 9 October 1915 from the Serbs with the help of the Germans under Mackensen. The image shows the citadel of Belgrade with an Austrian Danube monitor (gunboat) on the river in front of the fortress. Typically these badges were sold to raise money for the widows and orphans of the relevant units and were normally worn on the left-hand side of the Austrian field cap. Sometimes as many as six were worn all together. The badge would appear to be die-struck white metal (possibly unmarked silver) with a brass pin behind. It is of excellent quality. Its condition is good, with a little wear, but retaining much of its original frosted finish. |
