This rather fine uniface medal, marked 'T.H.WIEN', probably for Truppen Hospital, Vienna, would have been sold to raise funds for the hospital, in this case perhaps targetting prosperous cavalry officers' families, as a sabre and a dragoon helmet are at the base of the oak leaf wreath. The medal (4.5 x 3.5 cms) is in parcel gilt (ie partially gilt silver), showing an officer reclining on his hospital bed, and it has the maker's mark (HJ punched into the reverse) alongside an Austrian silver mint quality mark (the equivalent of an English hallmark). The condition is excellent, with all the original frosted finish and most of the gilding still in place. |
