In all probability, a Russian ground find. The owner was in the 4th Anti-Tank Company of Hitler's No 1 SS field regiment, the Leibstandarte (4th/SS Panzer Jaeger Kompanie 1). 'B' stands for his blood group. '457' is his regimental number. The Leibstandarte was famous as Hitler's bodyguard regiment, raised in 1933. These dog tags were carried by all active field units of the German armed forces and were meant, on the death of the owner, to be snapped in half, one half buried with the corpse, the other salvaged for regimental records. The condition is good for a ground find. More often than not, these are heavily corroded, usually due to the soil conditions and/or the disintegration of the corpse. |
