Title Luftwaffe dirk, model 1936, by Eickhorn
Nationality German
Period c 1936-41
Sold

These dirks were worn by all Luftwaffe flight personnel. Bomber crews and reconaissance personnel wore the long silver port-epee and fighter pilots the short knot, as shown here, thus indicating fighter pilot status. This second pattern Luftwaffe dirk replaced the earlier version with the leather scabbard.

The orange grip is relatively uncommon, most having plain white ones. There is some minor damage to the top of the grip where it meets the pommel, but all the original wiring is present. The anodised finish on the scabbard is intact, with only some minor traces of old rust spots. There is even a substantial trace of gilt finish on one of the swastikas of the pommel - Eickhorn originally made these with the swastikas having a gilt finish on both sides. There is some considerable age wear to the knot and the bullion and the fabric of the straps have suffered somewhat with age. The blade, however, is in excellent shape with a little minor age staining.
