Title M3 fighting knife
Nationality American
Period c 1944
Sold

Designated for issue to soldiers not armed with the bayonet, this knife (marked on the guard and blade 'U.S. M3' and on the chape 'U.S. M8A1') was especially designed for such shock units as parachute troops and rangers. The production of the Mark 3 knife began in 1943 and ceased in August 1944.

The blade has about 50% of its blued finish and has been sharpened on both edges. The scabbard is the penultimate pattern with a solid green plastic body and metal chape. The plastic part has scuffs and cuts on the obverse. The pommel has most of its blued finish and there is no ordnance mark. The web belt loop has got its brass hook. The leather grip is in excellent shape, with very little wear. It has brown plastic spacers at either end, indicating manufacture by the Imperial Knife Company, the only company of the eight or so manufacturers known who used this method of making grips. The web fastening loop is missing one metal end and the webbing has consequently frayed.

The package arrived savely today and the piece is absolutely marvellous.

It was a pleasure doing business with you and I'm looking forward to future aquisitions.

It got here this morning, presumably delayed by the holidays. It is perfect, indeed better than I was expecting.
