This fine walnut tipstaff is a Manchester example (from the overall shape - there are examples in a book by Fenn Clark and also in Mervyn Mitten's book). They were carried by the constables of this era for making arrests as a symbol of office. Traditionally, the villain needed to be touched on the right shoulder to be arrested. Virtually all the paintwork is intact, but there is some minor age damage to the top of the barrel in the form of several chips. Essentially, however, it is in very good shape for its age. |
