Title Matthew Boulton smallsword and chatelaine
Nationality British
Period c 1790
Sold

This fine cut steel smallsword is a classic Boulton production from the Soho works in Birmingham. This type of sword would have been worn at court right through the Regency period at the end of George III's reign. The blue and gold blade retains 80%+ of its original finish and its original chatelaine.

The scabbard is white snakeskin and is in excellent shape. I have now polished the scabbard mounts and removed the light covering of dried grease on the top and bottom chape. It has its original chain guard with one small section of the dangles missing. Otherwise the whole weapon is in excellent shape. The blade is almost certainly German. The hilt has 90%+ of its original lead polish finish.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!

I received the silver Verdienstkreuz this morning. Your swiftness and dedication was very much appreciated and, though the envelope arrived with a Post Office sticker saying it had been found open or damaged, the cross was unharmed and looks beautiful. Thanks for your time.
