This is an officer's plug bayonet from the early years of George I. In extremis, the weapon could be mounted in the barrel of a musket, but would have been carried perhaps more as a symbol of rank. The quillons are in the form of David (of Old Testament fame!) with a sword in one hand and Goliath's head in the other. The blade (nearly 13.5" long x 1.5" at the forte) is probably a cut down sword blade and is engraved with GR and a crown at the forte, the 'R' being largely polished out. There are no hallmarks on the mounts. There are some minor age splits to the ivory and some yellow staining near the guard. There are some old pit marks on one side of the blade which have been cleaned out. There is no scabbard. |
