The pickelhaube was the Prussian leather helmet introduced in 1842 and the cockade was worn on the right hand side of the helmet, with the national cockade in red, white and black on the left. These cockades were worn right up to the demise of the pickelhaube in about 1916, when the steel helmet replaced it. It is a die-struck piece of pressed steel, painted black all over and then with white in the groove. Some of the white has chipped off over the years and there is some wear to the black paint also. However, it is undoubtedly an original piece and measures approximately 5.2 cm across. |
