Title RAF officer's sword
Nationality British
Period c 1980
Sold

This sword is not exactly a pattern RAF sword, but may have been approved for use by officers on the basis of economy (see below). The blade is nicely silver-plated and engraved. The quality of casting of the hilt and mounts is what you would expect from a first-rate Solingen firm (again, see below).

This sword was made by Weyersberg & Kirschbaum of Solingen for the British RAF officers. At the time, it was considerably cheaper than the Willkinson Sword variety. However, the Germans economised on the design of the guard, failing to include the royal cypher. Furthemore, there are two small holes at the base of the guard, which are fine as designs to accommodate a naval sword knot, but completely extraneous where an RAF sword knot with a flat strap is concerned.

NB: the last price of a new Wilkinson RAF sword was, before they went out of business in about 2005, priced at about ?2,000 retail.
