This is one half of the buckle; the other half would have been identical except with a bronze snake in position as a connecting link. A typical 2nd Empire product (Napoleon III, 1854-71), it is of cast brass construction. Watercolours and prints of the period show this buckle in use. In the photos, it appears more coppery than in reality. It is definitely a yellow brass buckle. Its condition is excellent, showing little signs of use. It measures just over 5cm across.
