This flag was flown from U-boats and E-boats throughout the period of the Third Reich. It is stamped along the lanyard seam with the maker, 'Plutzar & Brull K.G. Bielitz O/S'. There is also a KM ownership stamp in the form of a small eagle over a capital 'M'. I have a good photograph of U-boat 467 being commissioned in 1942 and a similar flag of the same dimensions is shown at the masthead. It is made of high quality, very fine wool and owes its survival to having been soaked in nicotine fumes in a veteran's den! I gave it a good wash when I found it and the water turned brown! There are some half a dozen small moth holes throughout the piece, some stains here and there and signs of wear, but essentially in good shape for its age. There is one small piece of celotape on the central swastika, which I have been unable to remove and I would urge anyone to proceed with caution in this respect. |
