This is perhaps the rarest of the king's crown other ranks helmet plates for the Home Service pattern helmet of 1871. This was worn by Royal Marine Light Infantry, hence the bugle under the anchor at the base of the badge. The RMLI had a great pedigree, stretching back several centuries, originating as line regiments serving on ships. It has the single honour Gibraltar under the crown and the logo 'Per mare per terram', the motto of the Royal Marines, on a circlet around an image of the globe. It is a die-struck gilding metal badge (just over 10.5 cm wide) with two copper lugs brazed on the reverse. There is some damage at the base of the badge, where two or three points of the background star have been broken off. Otherwise the condition is excellent for its age. |
