Title S98/05 Mauser bayonet, leather scabbard, unit marked
Nationality German
Period 1910
Sold

This clean example of a 'Butcher' bayonet was made at the Erfurt arsenal in Saxony and has Prussian acceptance stamps for 1910. Both scabbard and hilt are unit marked for 2nd Foot Artillery regiment, number 6 battery, weapon number 96. This bayonet largely replaced the earlier long pipe-back model, initially intended for artillery and train units.

Condition is good throughout, with a particularly nice blade, some minor shrinkage to the leather scabbard, whose seam is intact. There is some old service wear to the reverse grip and a little oil staining to the obverse grip. All the ordnance stamps are still clear, only missing on the ball of the bottom chape and on the frog stud (perhaps these were never there in the first place?).
