This bayonet was for the later carbine versions of 1931 and 1942. This was the straight pull bolt action rifle with a ten-round magazine. The cartridge was a 7.5mm rimless variety. These bayonets, like the rifles, were beautifully made. This is an early example (ie nearer 1931 than 1942), with both scabbard, mounts and blade being made of mild steel, the grips being a nice fruitwood variety, unlike the later ones which tended to be made of beechwood. It has a double-edged blade, rather like the English long Lee Enfield, sharpened on both edges. It has a Swiss ordnance mark, in the form of a cross punched into the crossguard, and the maker's name, Waffenfabrik Neuhausen, punched into the forte at the base of the blade. Its condition is excellent, with a little wear through service use to the mild steel mounts of the hilt and most of the original blued and blacked finish has vanished from the scabbard. It has the original leather tag for the frog, this being somewhat distressed. |
