Title Hessian guard shako plate
Nationality German
Period c 1916
Price £75.00

This (9cm diamater) appears to be composed of two elements, the backing plate being the star of the Prussian Guard, but the central crown being more like the ducal crown of Hesse, which one finds on Hessian belt buckles in brass and anodised steel. My guess is that this is an extempore piece made in WW1 for Hessian Garde Jaeger battalions.

From the size and curvature of the badge, it would appear to have been designed with a busby or shako in mind, rather than a pickelhaube.

The words on the ribbon round the star state: 'Mit Gott fur Konig und Vaterland 1860'.

One point of the star appears to be broken, but otherwise the piece is in quite nice shape, with the bulk of its original dark charcoal grey finish intact.

If anyone knows what this is, I would be interested to hear. The price reflects my lack of current knowledge as to what it is, but it is definitely an original WW1 piece.

Just to let you know that the spoon came this morning and I am really pleased with it.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
