Title Turkish spear head
Nationality Turkish
Period 17th century
Price £100.00

This is one of a small collection of Turkish spear heads, purchased near Marmaris several years ago. This piece has been cleaned and there is still some grey patina to it with extensive traces of old surface rust. The overall length is 36cms. The point is now squared off as a result of damage.

These spears were typically carried by Turkish cavalry in the many wars with Austria in the 17th century and, in particular, the attempt to seize Vienna in the 1680s. They would, of course, have been mounted on long wooden shafts. There is a lead Turkish cultural export permit seal with 'M' on one side for Marmaris and 'EX' on the other.
