This is the rare silver grade, issued 24 November 1944 for exceptional valour in close combat, mostly against Allied aircraft assaults. Moreover, this is the first pattern of the clasp with a central hollowed out area to the reverse. The lesser bronze version had already been introduced on 15 May 1944. Both grades were made uniquely by Schwerin of Berlin (in raised letters on the reverse) and the designer's name is N W Peekhaus (ditto). This rare badge (7.7 x 2.5 cm) is made of zinc with a thin silver wash, most of which has been absorbed into the zinc over the years, but with approximately 10% remaining on both surfaces. There is a little minor surface rust on the pin, which could easily be removed, should it be desired. It weighs 22 grammes. |
