Title Union sergeant's sword
Nationality American
Period c 1860
Sold

This is the classic Federal NCO's sword of the US Civil War, carried by all sergeants in infantry units and possibly supply outfits. The blade is marked at the forte 'F.P.' with a rabbit's head. It could be an imported German blade.

The hilt is copied from a French original and is made of cast brass in three parts: pommel, grip and knuckle-bow/guard.

There is a little bruising to the barrel grip and the knuckle bow is slightly distorted, but generally the piece is in excellent shape for its age and it has never been dismantled. The blade measures just under 33" and the tip shows some old fire damage. It also has some minor age staining, mostly polished out.
