Title Wehrmacht (navy) tunic, model 1944
Nationality German
Period c 1944
Sold

This tunic, similar to the pattern used by U-boat crews, was based on the British battledress tank top of the same era. It was also used by Coastal Artillery units in Normandy and by Kriegsmarine boat crews as a general working jacket.

The cloth would appear to be made from a roll of police summer tunic material. There is a small 1.5cm hole in the back and a further area (approx 4 x 2cm) of moth tracking which has gone through the cloth, but not created a hole, as such, on the left sleeve by the elbow, just behind the seam.

The buttons are zinc with a field grey wash over the naval anchor and are clearly sewn on with old stitching. The tunic eagle is the last pattern in a mouse grey fabric on a field grey ground - it is a period example but may have been reapplied at some point as the white cotton stitching for the buttons is quite frail by comparison.

There are no epaulettes, which may have been removed, and there are no size markings on the tunic.

Thanks very much for the bayonet. I am very happy, I think your photos of your items are great because nothing is hidden and you can clearly see them. (Unlike some other dealers.) Everything was as you describe, I will be keeping a eye on your site for any further bayonets for my collection.
