VR and crown at one side of the forte and government inspector's marks on the other. A rare bayonet, some 9,000 Whitworth rifles were issued to the British Army in the 1860s, principally to the Rifle Brigade and Foot Guards, along with a few other line regiments. Perhaps, on account of the brown leather frog, this was carried by a volunteer unit; however, the markings on the bayonet itself would indicate regular issue rather than private purchase. It is noteworthy that the Whitworth rifle was used extensively by Confederate snipers in the War between the States. There is a small dent to the face of the top mount on the scabbard. Other than this, it is in excellent shape, with the seam intact and the bulk of the nap (finished surface of the leather) in good shape. There is a crease to the lower end of the leather of the scabbard, but the scabbard body is still good and stiff. The strap on the frog has been replaced recently, but the original nickle silver buckle has been retained. |
