Title Whitworth bayonet
Nationality British
Period c 1860
Sold

This is a rare bayonet: some 9,000 Whitworth rifles (calibre .451) were issued to the British Army in the 1860s, principally to the Rifle Brigade and Foot Guards, along with a few other line regiments. The markings include: VR and crown, and government inspector's marks in various places.

The ordnance markings on the bayonet indicate regular issue rather than private purchase. It is noteworthy that the Whitworth rifle was used extensively by Confederate snipers in the War between the States.

There are several small dents on the scabbard mounts and a small area of pitting on the face of the blade near the point. The leather chequering of the grip is in excellent shape, with little serious wear and with inspector's stamps on both sides. The seam of the leather of the scabbard is intact and there are copious markings stamped into the leather underneath the top mount (which, I'm afraid, don't really show up in the photos), which include the government surplus sales stamp, a WD and broad arrow stamp, and an ordnance inspector's stamp.
