Uniquely worn from 1901/02 by the Westminster Dragoons, this was finally replaced during WW1 by the 1908 pattern cavalry trooper's sword. The blade is etched with the name 'Hamburger Rogers & Co London' at the forte - to my knowledge, of the approximately 450 of these swords actually produced, all of them are by this maker. The grip is ebony. Both hilt and scabbard show a somewhat pickled surface consonant with old rust being carefully cleaned off with a wire mop. In the March 2002 issue of The Journal of the Arms & Armour Society (London), there is a seven-page article (with two pages of clear photographs showing this exact sword), which explains in great depth the background and use of this weapon. A copy of The Journal is available to the purchaser of this sword. |
