This was the second model for the Lebel rifle, being simpler to make, without the quillon, mirroring British practice with the SMLE bayonet of the same era. The shape of the press stud and receiver were also simplified. Famously, this would have been carried throughout the defence of Verdun, illustrated in photos and artwork of the time. This has a good blade, still nice and straight. The scabbard and hilt are a little on the rough side, but the press stud still works properly. The early models, pre-1916, normally had white metal hilts. Later examples had bronze and steel ones as well. |
