Title Whitworth bayonet, 1863 model
Nationality British
Period c 1863
Sold

VR and crown at one side of the forte of the blade and government inspector's marks on the other. A rare bayonet, some 9,000 Whitworth rifles were issued to the British Army in the 1860s, principally to the Rifle Brigade and Foot Guards, along with a few other line regiments.

The black leather frog would indicate that this was issued to a Rifle regiment, either the 60th or the 95th. Line regiments would have worn a white buff frog at this period. There is a small dent to the face of the top mount on the scabbard. Other than this, it is in excellent shape, with the seam intact and the bulk of the nap (finished surface of the leather) in good shape.

testimonials

Just to let you know that the bayonets arrived safely this morning and I am extremely happy! They are everything that I had hoped they would be, but better! I am extremely pleased that i purchased them from you. The 1867 Albini ... is an absolute beauty, the blade is immaculate. The other is in fact in far better condition that I had imagined as well. So all in all, I couldn't be happier! Many thanks Chris.

I very much look forward to doing business with you again in the near future.
