Title Tinder lighter by Simmons
Nationality British
Period 1810-35
Price £1000.00

A small quantity of tow or wood shavings would have been placed in the pan, from which to light a candle. This Georgian example is marked 'Simmons' on the lock plate, which could refer to a Birmingham or London maker. 'G S' is lightly stamped in a dog-tooth-bordered rectangle on the left side of the stock, which could refer to the maker or owner.

The legs and the candlestick tray appear to be of modern brass, having a yellowish tint, the rest of the brass having the pinkish tint that one associates with early 19th-century brass work. The price reflects the restoration work, as an almost identical tinder lighter recently sold at Christie's South Kensington for almost 2,000 hammer.

Its condition is excellent: it functions crisply on half and full cock, and the locking mechanism on the trap door functions. There is a slight squaring off of the stock at the base of the grip consonant with age and use.

The day the blunderbuss arrives I could not stop looking and feeling the gun for at least one hour. My wife told me that I was sick........ I am very happy, it is a piece of craftsmanship! Well made! I have 5 blunderbusses but all iron barrel, also from England but this one is gorgeous with the Brass Barrel.

Please keep me informed when you have any other type of blunderbuss. Thanks my friend!
