Title German forester's belt buckle
Nationality German
Period c 1860
Sold

This cast silver (probably 800 parts out of 1,000) box buckle has applied initials (of the estate owner/forester), with the initials and beading in parcel gilt. The silversmith's initials are punched in the side of the buckle. I acquired this from the family, whose origins lay in the Prussian Rhineland.

Almost certainly, there would have been a leather backing to the central cartouche (ie behind the initials), perhaps in green, to set it off.

The overall condition is excellent for its age and these buckles are, in any case, quite rare - at least in the UK - and nice to find with the accompanying clasp.

If you want to comment on this item—re quality, age, etc—please email me.
