Title Gras bayonet, Austrian make
Nationality Austrian
Period 1877
Sold

This fairly common bayonet of French design is rendered more interesting by its Austrian manufacture, the blade being marked 'Waffenfabrik Steyr 1877' and the release catch 'OEWG' (Oesterreiches Waffen Gesellschaft). These bayonets were probably made for an export order of Gras rifles to the Greek army and possibly other Balkan countries.

There are matching numbers to scabbard and hilt. The condition is good for its age, but it is by no means pristine. There are faint traces of original blue finish at the top of the scabbard.

My order arrived this morning, thanks for the prompt delivery.

Two excellent original pieces, I must say.

Buckle is in minty condition retaining so much detail esp plummage on eagle's neck and chest, like to see those 'creases' on the legs also... a beautiful example of an early O&C buckle.

Belt is very interesting, rather thin, CROUPON stamped and also behind the tongue...maybe Allegmeine but no SS markings as you state. Beautiful piece none the less.

Thanks for a speedy transaction Chris, I am very happy with my purchase :)
