This fairly common bayonet of French design is rendered more interesting by its Austrian manufacture, the blade being marked 'Waffenfabrik Steyr 1877' and the release catch 'OEWG' (Oesterreiches Waffen Gesellschaft). These bayonets were probably made for an export order of Gras rifles to the Greek army and possibly other Balkan countries. There are matching numbers to scabbard and hilt. The condition is good for its age, but it is by no means pristine. There are faint traces of original blue finish at the top of the scabbard. |
