This unit was raised in the early 1860s, initially as only one battalion, later further battalions were added, but the absence of a unit number on this piece indicates its early provenance. It was probably worn by a sergeant or an officer. The Rifle Volunteer movement of the 1860s stemmed from the French invasion fears of the era. The white metal mounts have a thin silver wash with no maker marks apparent and the leather is in superb condition for its age. One of the locking nuts is missing from the reverse of the belt plate, together with a couple of washers from the whistle mount. |
