This is almost certainly a Guard Artillery piece and has the battle honour 2nd Mukden and 1905 pinned on in high relief in the typical red copper fittings redolent of Guard units. The eagle has the crossed cannons of the gunners pinned on in the same metal. The body of the piece is brass with a gilt wash.

The Russian Army was the last of all the European armies to abandon the gorget, which was historically a symbol of an officer being on duty. Typically this would only have been worn on parade occasions, especially after the Russo-Japanese war.

There are substantial traces of lacquer on the back of the plate and originally there might well have been a cloth backing.

These survivors from the Tsar's army rarely come on the market.
