Seven companies of the Irish Horse were raised for the Boer War and this was the badge they wore on a coloured silk cockade on the side of the slouch hat. This unit would have recruited widely across Ireland, typically from the Anglo-Irish gentry in the South and perhaps a bit more widely in the North. The manner in which this badge was worn aped the practice of the local mounted volunteers in South Africa, many of whom wore their badges on the slouch hat in the same manner. It is made of bronze or gilding metal and has two copper lugs sweated onto the reverse. For some reason, few of these seem to have survived, despite the number of companies that were raised.
