This type of spur would have been worn in the Crusader armies in the early Middle Ages. They were really only superceded when the new style Gothic spurs appeared, with much longer shanks and the introduction of rowels in the 14th century. This has had a hard life and both the strap fittings may well be modern replacements. It is a ground find and heavily corroded throughout (except for the strap fittings!), although the rust has been consolidated and is now a pleasing blackened finish throughout. |
