Title Iron rowel spur
Nationality German
Period 16th/17th century
Price £60.00

Rowel spurs first appeared in the 14th century. Originally the shanks were very long (in the Gothic period), getting progressively shorter as time went by. This classic design was worn well into the 17th century throughout northern Europe, and would have been standard fare in the Thirty Years War and the English Civil War.

This 10-point rowel spur measures 8 cm across at the instep. It would appear to have been cleaned by shot blasting, giving it a characteristically light grey finish with an extensive pock-marked surface. However, it retains all its original form and the rowel runs free. This is a ground find.

testimonials

Wanted to let you know the items arrived today. Great job on the packing. Too often I buy very expensive and irreplaceable items from the UK and they get sent barely packed to protect them from the various postal services - appreciate you going the extra mile to insure it arrived in the shape it left. Thanks again, look forward to doing business with you in the future. Items were very nice, exactly as offered.
