This somewhat battered cap was the classic worn at sea in summer or the tropics. In U-boat service, only the captain wore them, while on surface ships all officers could wear them. The rank definition is in the braid, which grew increasingly elaborate as the rank ascended. The braid on this cap is the basic style for all ranks up to Capt. Lt. The white top is integral with the hat and is not a white cover over the traditional dark blue cap. The cockade is gold bullion and the eagle would appear to be tombak with a gilt wash. The sweat band is medium brown calf leather. The outside measurement is 60 cms; therefore, I suspect the internal size is 56/57 cms. These caps were introduced in 1936, and, needless to say, these white top peak caps remain one of the most desirable of all Third Reich navy pieces. This cap has clearly seen considerable wear on active service and may well have been a U-boat captain's cap on account of the condition of the white top. The rest of the cap is in remarkably good shape, although there is a small hole at the rear of the exterior cap band. The top photograph whites out at the top because I wanted to brighten the photo sufficiently to show the dark blue felted wool of the peak. |
