Title Mace head
Nationality Ukrainian?
Period 15th/16th century
Sold

This piece, which could also be Polish/Russian, is made of wrought iron. It would originally have been mounted on an 18" shaft and would have been the primary weapon for attacking armoured Islamic cavalry, as it would have very swiftly destroyed the fairly light turban helmets of the period.

Of the eight small hooks which appear under the main wings of the mace, sadly only three are still extant, the rest having been damaged, possibly through the abuse/use of the weapon over the centuries. A nice example, despite this damage, of an early prototype of a classic Polish/Russian/Ukrainian mace of this period.

The iron cross you sent me came on Saturday morning. Very pleased with the medal.

Just a short note to let you know that I have collected the Police fur cap this morning from the Post Office. I am really happy with it, and for sure I will give a thumbs-up to your service. This was the first item I ever bought from you, and I hope it will not be the last.
