This is the classic Indian matchlock musket, seeing use from the early 17th to the mid 19th century during the Mutiny of 1857/58 and somewhat later on the North West Frontier. This would have been carried by native troops (both by foot and horse) in the service of the local princes and nobility. It has a fine quality damascus barrel of approximately 20 gauge and is brass mounted throughout. The stock is a fine grained two-tone hardwood. It has a 105cm / 4' 9 3/4" barrel. There is no pan cover - I suspect one's left thumb was the safety! The sights are of the peep type, ie the front post is lined up with a small circle in the backsight. There is an old repair to the butt, where an 8cm chip has come adrift and been carefully replaced under the brass band on the butt. Apart from extensive traces of old metal polish, mostly between stock and barrel, the piece is in excellent shape. It has the original iron ramrod. |
