Title P53 Enfield socket bayonet
Nationality British
Period c 1853-70
Sold

This English bayonet has native markings, possibly Nepalese, and may well have been used in the Indian Mutiny. Certainly this type of bayonet would have seen extensive service in the Crimean War and in the Mutiny.

It is a bit scruffy and is lightly patinated with dried grease and surface rust over all, but is still in reasonable condition, with a little bruising at the muzzle end of the socket. It would have had a leather and brass scabbard, which is missing.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
