This is perhaps one of the rarest of the 20th-century British sword knots. It was designed to be worn with a police mamaluke sword which had a black ebony hilt and silver finish fittings. They were occasionally worn on other swords, but only the rope type strap was purposely designed to fit through the hole at the top of the hilt on a mamaluke. Senior officers wore these swords from the Edwardian era forwards until quite recent times. This is obviously of the earlier ilk (viz its condition). The damage would indicate to me that it has almost certainly been worn on a mamaluke from the positions where the tears in the fabric occur. The silver is brighter than the picture represents and the colour motif is silver bullion with a black fleck throughout. |
