This poster describes the form of Queen Victoria's procession from Buckingham Palace to St Paul's and back again on the occasion of a thanksgiving service for the recovery (from typhoid) of Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). It lists the various militaray units, ambassadors, and civic dignitaries, etc who accompanied her. What is interesting is that this must have been one of the few occasions on which the Queen appeared in public, as, after the death of her husband, Prince Albert, from typhoid in 1861, she rarely appeared in public. She was nicknamed the Widow at Windsor, always dressed in black. Broadsheets from this era are increasingly hard to find. The poster has the printer's details and address at the bottom. Made of wood pulp paper, this poster measures 7.5 x 20 inches and has about a dozen small holes, mainly along the creases. It is spotted throughout with foxing, which is what you would expect on wood pulp paper of this age. The edges have some damage and the paper is, of course, somewhat frail. |
