Title RAF officer's sword
Nationality British
Period c 1980
Sold
(This item is subject to special postage, click here for more information.)

This sword is not exactly a pattern RAF sword, but may have been approved for use by officers on the basis of economy (see below). The blade is nicely silver-plated and engraved. The quality of casting of the hilt and mounts is what you would expect from a first-rate Solingen firm (again, see below).

This sword was made by Weyersberg & Kirschbaum of Solingen for the British RAF officers. At the time, it was considerably cheaper than the Willkinson Sword variety. However, the Germans economised on the design of the guard, failing to include the royal cypher. Furthemore, there are two small holes at the base of the guard, which are fine as designs to accommodate a naval sword knot, but completely extraneous where an RAF sword knot with a flat strap is concerned.

NB: the last price of a new Wilkinson RAF sword was, before they went out of business in about 2005, priced at about 2,000 retail.

testimonials

[From a vendor, rather than a buyer]

I'm delighted that you are happy with the badge and I hope you can sell it to someone who will value owning it.

I tried to sell it on eBay but they won't accept Nazi items. I then contacted several dealers via a Google search who mostly offered me 40-50 after some haggling. Most of the other dealers tried to conceal its true value in their replies and also lacked manners which doesn't inspire confidence.

Ultimately it's about trust. I should think that most prospective sellers have done their own research and therefore know roughly what their item is worth. You were the only dealer who had the integrity to concede that my valuation was approximately correct and I respect your comment that you can't offer this as you need to make a profit. Your honest approach is greatly appreciated and I felt comfortable taking the risk in sending it to you.

Thank you for a smooth transaction
