This buckle, maker marked for Emil Juttner of Ludenscheid, is the classic officer's buckle of Waffen SS officers from circa 1943 onwards, struck from pot metal and given a silver-grey wash, most of which still survives. This replaced the earlier bright nickel silver or aluminium finish, which, as the war progressed, became scarce. The silver-grey wash tended to dull the shine factor, thus rendering it a less enticing target. The female part of the buckle is missing, which is pretty standard for most of these buckles. Note the absence of RZM or M/4 markings, again typical of mid-to-late war production. |
