This classic sabre was carried by Union troopers throughout the US Civil War (1861-5), or in the Plains Indian Wars afterwards. It is marked 'J.ROBY / W. CHELMSFORD / MASS.' on one side of the forte and dated 1865 with a US mark on the other. Typically, the cavalry trooper was armed with this, a six-shot percussion revolver and a carbine. The blade has lost all its factory polish, but is still in good shape. There is a strand of brass wire missing from the grip near the pommel; otherwise, the grip and guard are in excellent shape. I have deliberately left the patina on the guard and scabbard to avoid confusion with the myriad reproductions of this sword on offer. A point of essential interest is the brazing seam on the scabbard, which distinguishes the originals from the copies, and the nice patina to the leatherwork. Most of the copies I have seen are marked for Ames, Chicopee, Mass., rather than Roby. |
