Title Weimar army officer's sword
Nationality German
Period c 1933-35
Sold

This is an Eickhorn make right on the border of the Weimar and the Third Reich era on account of having a gilt aluminium hilt and the style of the maker mark. These swords were carried as dress swords by infantry officers and senior NCOs.

It retains some 80% of its gilding, noticeably showing wear on the backstrap, where the aluminium shows through the gilt finish. The scabbard has most of its original black paintwork, but has got somewhat crinkled with age. The blade is marked Eickhorn Solingen, with the standing squirrel mark of 1933-35, and is in splendid shape with a little barely noticeable pickling to the nickel finish, which is normal for a piece of this age. I have replaced the leather washer because the original had worn away. Otherwise, apart from a good clean, it is as I found it.

[From a vendor, rather than a buyer]

I'm delighted that you are happy with the badge and I hope you can sell it to someone who will value owning it.

I tried to sell it on eBay but they won't accept Nazi items. I then contacted several dealers via a Google search who mostly offered me £40-£50 after some haggling. Most of the other dealers tried to conceal its true value in their replies and also lacked manners which doesn't inspire confidence.

Ultimately it's about trust. I should think that most prospective sellers have done their own research and therefore know roughly what their item is worth. You were the only dealer who had the integrity to concede that my valuation was approximately correct and I respect your comment that you can't offer this as you need to make a profit. Your honest approach is greatly appreciated and I felt comfortable taking the risk in sending it to you.

Thank you for a smooth transaction

Thanks very much for the bayonet. I am very happy, I think your photos of your items are great because nothing is hidden and you can clearly see them. (Unlike some other dealers.) Everything was as you describe, I will be keeping a eye on your site for any further bayonets for my collection.
