VR and crown at one side of the forte of the blade and government inspector's marks on the other. A rare bayonet, some 9,000 Whitworth rifles were issued to the British Army in the 1860s, principally to the Rifle Brigade and Foot Guards, along with a few other line regiments. The black leather frog would indicate that this was issued to a Rifle regiment, either the 60th or the 95th. Line regiments would have worn a white buff frog at this period. There is a small dent to the face of the top mount on the scabbard. Other than this, it is in excellent shape, with the seam intact and the bulk of the nap (finished surface of the leather) in good shape. |
