The Glasgow Yeomanry was one of the oldest Scottish yeomanry units, troops originally being raised in the Glasgow area from 1797. This example may date from as early as 1848 and would have been unchanged until 1902, when the king's crown replaced the queen's. The silver finish would appear to be original, the lettering being pinned to the plate with rivets, whereas the cast gilt wreath and crown are fixed with brass pins and copper eyes. The crown appears rather dark in my photo, but in reality this simply reflects a little tarnish. The background to the lettering is dull, as I was unable to get in and polish it. The surface condition of the metalwork is generally sound. There is no female clasp to this buckle. |
