Title Mexican Remington bayonet, model 1899
Nationality American
Period c 1899
Sold

Of a parcel of 12, 'WASHINGTON / NAVAL YARD' was burnt into the wooden grips of nine in an oval border around 'US ORD. DEPT.' (see photo - but this one is NOT marked). The Washington Naval Yard was the largest US Navy ordnance store department in the US and was located in Virginia.

These bayonets were probably either captured Mexican pieces from the border wars in the early 20th century or were custom built by Remington for the US Navy Lee bolt action rifle. This is a modified form of the Mexican issue, inasmuch as it has a US-style steel belt hook where the Mexican originals had a leather one. I have never seen examples of this bayonet (in the US issue format) before in 40 years of collecting and dealing.

The blade of one of this lot of bayonets was marked on one side, 'REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION N.Y.'; and on the other, 'BANNERMAN ISLAND N.Y.'

The condition is consonant with its age and use. The scabbard is missing and there is a patch of medium corrosion, which could be carefully polished off, to the quillon. The grips are nice long-grain American walnut.

Wanted to let you know the items arrived today. Great job on the packing. Too often I buy very expensive and irreplaceable items from the UK and they get sent barely packed to protect them from the various postal services - appreciate you going the extra mile to insure it arrived in the shape it left. Thanks again, look forward to doing business with you in the future. Items were very nice, exactly as offered.
